Chapter 6

Sharing Grace

I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints. I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

My journey had begun, and I never could have imagined what my future held. I knew I wanted to share with others what the Lord had done in my life. He had showered me with His grace, and I wanted Him to bring people in my life so I could tell them about Him. I prayed that He would do that for me.

My heart’s desire was to know God, learn more about His Word, and listen for and obey His voice, even when I thought it seemed inconsequential to me. For example, the Lord may prompt me to call or pray for someone. It may be a little thing, but knowing that God is telling me to do it makes me want to obey. I want to sense that nudging from the Lord and obey in faith without giving it a second thought—even though I don’t know what may be ahead.

One such incident happened within the first year I was saved. There was a couple whom I will call Suzy and Jim. They were stationed at the Army base, Fort Jackson, in Columbia, South Carolina. At our Wednesday night prayer meeting, they shared that they had been praying for God to send someone to keep their children while Suzy, who was pregnant with their third child, had her baby. Since their families were not close by and they didn’t have the finances to hire help, this was a huge need. Because prayer requests were given at the beginning of the service, by the time the service was over, I had forgotten the request.

A few days later, the Lord reminded Larry and me of this need. The next Sunday, I told Jim we would like to keep the children when the baby came. After church, I met Suzy and found out the baby was due in a few weeks. I told her that would give us plenty of time for the children and me to become better acquainted before the baby arrived.

Suzy and I made plans for me to come to her house the following week, but at 7:15 the next morning, Jim was at our door. He didn’t just have his two children, but four, all under the age of five. Two of them were his, and the other two were foster children they had previously taken in. So much for our long-range plans of getting acquainted before the baby arrived!

I was taking care of three young girls and a little boy, plus a Bible study was going to take place at my house in just a couple of hours. I cried out, “Lord, what am I going to do? Help!” I found a children’s video and put it on, and they watched it while we had Bible study.
